Background on Ron Leach

Ronald J. Leach is an independent consultant and lecturer. Before he retired, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Systems and Computer Science (Emeritus) from Howard University. He has consulted for many of the largest software companies in the world.

My activities both before and after retirement include:

  • University Teaching: I taught a variety of technical subjects for 41 years.
  • University Administration: As a Computer Science Department Chair for nine years, I had the pleasure of interacting with a large number of companies and professionals. In 2004-2005, Howard University sent more students to Microsoft than any other college or university in the United States.
  • Writing: I have updated many of my computer science books that were originally published by a variety of commercial publishers. Some are available primarily as ebooks. Other computer science books, such as Introduction to Software Engineering, Second Edition, published by CRC Press/Chapman and Hall, are available in a variety of both print and digital formats.
  • Fiction Writing: I have written a number of works of fiction, not counting the budget justifications I wrote as Department Chair.
  • Accreditation: As a department chair, I was heavily involved with accreditation of our Computer Science program. I have been an ABET volunteer team member on several site visits to other universities to evaluate their computing programs and have written three articles on the accreditation process. One year, I was the ABET coordinator for the entire set of engineering programs.
  • Genealogy: For several years I was either the Editor, co-Editor, or Technical Editor of the Maryland Genealogical Society Journal and the Editor of the Maryland Genealogical Society Newsletter. For many years, I was also the webmaster. I wrote the Genealogy Technology column, and published several books on genealogy.
  • Cruise Ship Lecturing: After retirement, I lectured on a variety of topics; some were focused on particular ports of call, others were more general in nature.
Slides for many of my lectures both on computing and as a cruise lecturer are available for free download. Many of my works of fiction are also included here.
